artist bio and history of work

I’m Addie Wuensch and I am an artist from NY residing in Wilmington, NC and have owned an art gallery/ art event space for the last 9 years in the downtown area.

I am a contemporary postmodern street artist, I also show in galleries and I make all kinds of art on canvas, found objects, canvas, jewelry design, clothing, graffiti purses, street art installations, gallery installations, I do performance art, wheat pastes, multimedia graffiti, mosaic graffiti, murals, public art etc. It’s postmodern/ contemporary/ graffiti based work with a poetry theme throughout.

I’ve been making art and showing it in NYC and NC for about 20 years now.  I design a line of spray painted jewelry called “graffiti.”

I also make music and I’m in a band with East Bay Ray from the Dead Kennedys called Red Gemini. It’s punk/ poetry/ rock.

Body positivity is a huge theme in my art. I began modeling in my early 20s in NYC and I was making a lot of paintings. I realized when I was modeling that modeling was not for me but I was meant to be a lifelong artist. Modeling definitely has the potential to make people pick apart their bodies.

When I was living in NYC I had pictures of my work printed to fit my modeling portfolio and would wait for each casting director to flip to the back where the photos of my paintings were and I asked everyone I met if they knew how I could get a show in New York until I got my first show in New York in a spot in Chelsea which led to more NY shows.

I also used to go on the rooftop and spray paint found objects, chains, crystals to make my line of graffiti jewelry which I took around in a trunk with a butterfly painted in the front to all the stores in soho until I found two stores to carry my line.

Lots of no’s before you get a yes, but don’t give up!

Each painting I make has elements of a graffiti wall like a little slice of street with postmodern contemporary and divine feminine themes.

Some more themes found in my work are social justice, human rights, gender diversity, mental health, music, poetry, dreams, spiritual issues, sex, women’s issues, empathy, God.
